so, practically...what should i do? if i get a Ph.D. in a certain field, will that limit me in my capacity to still be the renaissance woman i wanna be? can i get a Ph.D. in philosophy and still write about neuroscience in some aspect? — Asked by renaissance-gland

I’d say look into neuroethics- many of those guys are heavily tied into philosophy & neuroscience these days and talk about consciousness, free will (one of my favs), morality, harm, god, empathy, evil (which I’m studying now) and science and the soul.

The thing is, there is so much over lap in the fields, it’s certainly possible to study philosophy and write about the relationship/intersection of neuroscience. It’s all about finding the  program (outlet) where you can do these things and find great mentors while getting research experience. So, I always suggest finding someone who does work that you love..work like the ever-awesome Daniel Dennett (watch that, he’s so great), UPenn’s Martha J. Farah, Fiery Cushman out of Brown, J. Greene from Harvard… and there’s lots, lots more. I also get excited about Thomas Nadelhoffer’s work in punishment theory- but that’s just me.

So pick your favs in the areas you like, read everything they’ve done.  Then read all the people/work they reference, contact who you like, inform them of your interest in their work and the program. See if they are accepting new students in their labs…and apply to the program. Then bring in your voice to the mix and badda bing, badda boom, high fives all around.

Just b/c you doctorate is in one thing, doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t apply it to another area OR use it to your advantage to at least contribute. You can also get a BA in this and a MA in that - or go straight from BA to PhD. That’s one of the great things about a PhD: variety. And bourbon. Other things about it are a nightmare like remembering to focus on things, remembering the Alamo, time management, money (where is it? Can I haz some?) and the eventual cat lady effect… the list goes on and on.
